The sport of softball is no stranger to Sherwood Christian Academy, but it’s been on the back burner in recent years due to its competition with another favorite fall sport – volleyball. A renewed interest among our female students sparked the idea of bringing softball back to the forefront of our sports programs.
With Fall 2023 came a fresh start for softball at SCA to head out to the field again. SCA welcomed Jr. Pro Softball as one of three new sports offered this year. The inaugural team was made up of 11 4th-6th graders, with only one 6th grader, and three community coaches. The Jr. Pro softball athletes knocked it out of the park in their first season with an impressive record of five victories and only three defeats! They also hosted a tournament at Legacy Park for several softball teams in the Southwest Georgia community.
Here’s a little more about Jr. Pro Softball according to Head Coach Allethea Brooks:
Coaches: Head coach – Allethea Brooks; Assistant coaches – Julie Gilbert & Madilin Jones
What’s been the most exciting or fun moment of softball this season? Watching each girl in their own moment. Everyone of them has had one moment during the season where they either had a great hit or made a great play. It did not matter if we won or lost, in that very moment for each individual player, they were winning and that was fun to watch as a coach.
What accomplishments has the team made this year? With only four out of 11 athletes that have had only one season of softball under their belts, our team has made great strides with skill work and confidence with softball. I have seen them grow with their batting and their determination in the field.
Any future plans for softball at SCA? SCA plans to grow the program over the next several years to include both middle and high school teams.
