SCA TEACHER SPOTLIGHT | Mrs. Joy Postlewaite

“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Proverbs 6:27

It’s mid-morning, and Mrs. Joy Postlewaite’s fourth-grade science class is engrossed in the fascinating world of bees and insects. She pauses the class and encourages them to stand up and give their best impression of a bee. Excited students eagerly oblige, buzzing around for a moment before returning to their seats to continue their lesson, which has now shifted to ants. Mrs. Postlewaite seamlessly intertwines her lesson on bees and bugs with a Biblical teaching, emphasizing how God takes profound care of His creation. She reinforces the truth that each one of these unique fourth-graders is a precious creation made in His image.

Following this discussion, the class takes their learning outdoors to observe insects up close.

Mrs. Postlewaite is a recent addition to Sherwood Christian Academy, and she has a remarkable story about her journey from Virginia to Albany, Georgia this year. Her story in her words:

Two years ago, our family started praying for God to show us where He wanted us to follow Him. My husband had been a Christian school teacher and God had called Him to pastor. We continued teaching and serving at Gateway Christian Academy and Church (Virginia Beach, VA) while he went on to pursue a degree to do so. During those two years, we prayed! We prayed that God would show us His plan and next place to serve. We prayed David would find a congregation, I would find a ministry (hopefully teaching!), and our five kids would find godly friends.

We moved at the beginning of July, so David could pastor at First FWB Church, and God worked all the details for the kids and me to be at Sherwood. God is so good!!! He provides far more abundantly than we could ever ask or think! (Eph. 3:20)

AS A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? A teacher

WHY DO YOU THINK CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT?:
In a world where our children are constantly being bombarded with anti-Biblical teachings, I believe it is an invaluable gift to place a child in Christian Education. My prayer for my students is that they will be strong soldiers and selfless servants for Christ! While so many focus on the temporary goals, I am so thankful to be able to teach children to focus on the eternal! This is not a swap. By focusing on the eternal soul of our children, we are enabling them to reach their “highest potential.” We are helping to shape our students into who God created them to be.
